FTCE Professional Education Exam

Last week I took the third of three exams required for my certification.  In my opinion this was the hardest exam of the three. This test consists of 120 multiple choice questions to be answered in 2.5 hours.  It took me a little over two hours to complete including reviewing questions I wanted to spend more time on.  All of the questions are scenario based, which is one of the reasons why it was so difficult.  To wrap my mind around a new teaching scenario for every question was mentally exhausting.  I used the Cliff Notes Pro Ed exam book for about three weeks and took all three practice exams included with the book.  I failed my first attempt since I used it as a diagnostic test to narrow down what I really needed to study.  I passed the other practice exams, but not as well as I wanted to.  You are required to answer approximately 88 questions correctly in order to pass.

Here are my recommendations for passing the test:
1. If you are already familiar with your state's laws and statutes related to teaching and professional conduct, then you are already at an advantage.  If not, look them up now!

2. Pay attention to the questions that ask you to choose the "best" or "first" thing to do in a situation.  The answers will most likely point to "realizing student potential" and/or the most logical choice given among the four answers if you exercise a bit of common sense.

3.  Review the Bill of Rights (especially Amendments 1 and 5) and also Amendment 14.

4.  Memorize the court cases related to  ending segregation, any type of discrimination, disabilities, and ESOL students.

5.  The topics of ESOL, ESE, and gifted were emphasized in my exam.

Apparently, I studied enough in those three weeks to pass the exam the first time!  I hope my post will help you in your preparation.  Good Luck!

Thanks for posting your experience with the Professional Exam. I already passed the GKE! I want to get a head start on the taking the Professional Exam beforehand.

I took the test today. I passed. I did NOT study. It was super easy and common sense plus process of elimination works best. Some answers were just to silly and obvious. Going in thinking you will PASS is the best way to pass. I answered the questions and still had 52 minutes left for the test. This was my first two taking the test. As you stated, ESOL, ELL, Advance students and classroom management/assessment practices were the majority. If all you need is 88 questions, make sure you answer 100 right to be safe. I kept up with the ones I got correct and that left me with room to get a few wrong with no stress ~ its really not hard

I appreciate your insight. Were the majority of the questions scenario based? I am taking the exam tomorrow.

I really doo appreciate your advise. I've always been a terrible test-taker. I've started taking the test as of last year, June 2014 when the test was changed. Do you have any additional suggestions for passing the exam by chance? I've actually failed this test several times, I have multiple study sources. I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong during my preparation. Please help, if you can!!

found the Pro Ed exam to be the hardest one. Since I took these tests before they were changed, I'm not sure how different they are from the new ones. Common sense and attention to the KINDS of answers they deem correct are what will help you survive this exam.

Okay, I will keep trying. Thank you so much for your advice.

Hello everyone,

I need to start studying for this Prof. Ed. exam and would like to know what study guides you found to be useful. I am not a teacher but I do work in school and am required to take this test (so I am not familiar with laws and what not). I really appreciate your input. I am aware that the test was changed in 2014. Please feel free to email at silace83@gmail.com if you like.

Hey. I have a question. What is the best way to study for the professional? I have took this test several times and still haven't passed. Each time I take the test, there are different questions. I never get the same question. In addition, I've heard that the test has changed last year. Can anyone help me please? Its my last test to take to become certified. Please feel free to reply back to me or email me at Wayquitaricks13@gmail.com

For those of you who have mentioned quizlets.com, can that be accessed online, or is it just a phone app? I can't get to it online.

Hi everyone, I took the FTCE GK exams and only passed the english part in July of last year. Since then changes were made and im told that the exams are much harder now.
Can anyone help me please with the reading and essay. I will be taking these two in April.

Doris

Christina, as you know, the GK comes in 4 sub-tests: Math, English, Reading, and Essay. Take only ONE sub-test at a time. Even though it's more expensive that way, it eases the mind to only focusing on one subject at a time.

However, last time I didn't follow my own advice. I took Math and English sub-tests at one sitting, and I only passed one. This strategy has worked well in the past, and I'm preparing to take the Math section again this month.
My advice to you is simple: Don't try to tackle all FOUR sub-tests at one time, even if it costs more to do it this way. Take one at a time until you have passed them all. ESPECIALLY topics you know you have a problem with, such as math.

Hope this helps

I taked the PEd test three times now and can't seem to pass it. I have used the books and have really been studying but what gets me are the scenarios. I have until August to pass it and I'm starting to freak out. Can anyone recommend a study guide that they may have used that worked for you? Thanks

I have 4 different study guides and have listened to Learning Liaisons. If you figure out how to pass this test please let me know.

    Welcome!

This blog exists because I wish someone had done this for me when I was going through the process of certification.

I am working toward my certification in K-12 Music through the TeacherReady online program via the University of West Florida.  I already have several years of teaching experience, but never got around to getting an actual certificate.  The information I plan to provide should help those who are also going "backwards" through this process.

    UPDATE 05/20/15
I am now certified in K-12 Music and working to land a teaching job just like you!

    UPDATE 06/25/15
I have been hired to teach Middle School Music beginning Fall 2015!

    UPDATE 08/20/16
I am now the Music Teacher for PK-2 at West Navarre Primary School!
