I doubt it. Someone posted that they tried and were told they couldn't do that. However, I have also read in the FTCE general exam blog where someone posted- that she appealed along with a co-worker and they won. She says for some reason its not to there advantage to have so many people appealing.

Cameron, I took the GK exam over a year ago and passed everything except the essay. I read someone's comment about appealing the score, but I think it has to be done within a limited amount of time after the score is received. I would like to know more about the appeal process so if I fail again, I might consider the appeal. I know I definitely followed the rubric the first time, and I scored a 6. I think I could easily argue that I met the requirements for an 8 or higher, but too much time has passed. I want to be prepared next time. I'm desperate! I cannot pass the essay part of the Gen. Knowledge. Please also send me any info on appealing. The first 2 attempts I knew I wasnt going to pass it because I ran out of time and didn't finish. I got a 6 both times. The 3rd time, I thought I had done the perfect essay (thesis, transitional words, supporting details and even an anecdote) I was in shock when I received a NOT PASSED and they gave me a 6 again! I dont know how an uncompleted essay can received the same score as a completed one. Then I took it a 4th time did not pass it again. I am going on my 5th try.

That is incorrect.

You can appeal for $75.00, with-in 30 days of getting your score. You can also, go to your Dr. and ask for a letter, if there might be something diagnosed that would hinder you from being able to concentrate, test anxiety or something. File that with Pearson. Advise that you are requesting more time to take your next test.

I wouldn't bother appealing the test. Just keep taking it. Make sure you use transititions for each example. For example, write your fact or statement, then of course give an example for each statement but of course begin each statement with a transition. Try to have at least 2 examples for each statement.

example: Using the internet allows students to strengthen their study skills. For example, jessica scored 100% on her english test from studying on the internet.

Something like that example.

The more transition, the more example, the better your score will be.

INDENT!!! Each new paragraph. Try to have NO LESS than 5 sentences for each paragraph. Try to also have 5 PARAGRAPHS. NO LESS than 4.

But make it simple and get to the point.

REA study guide page 160 and 161 have good explanations.

I am sure you can google for a similar explanations of word problems such as workplace salaries, etc.

Generally I use acronyms to remember median and mode.

I write down the data in order on the writing materials.

Solve for the mean first if they are asking you to compare which statistical measure would be the highest (total) or something like that.

Also I strongly recommend that you understand the tree diagram for coin toss probability and remember that these are theoretical outcomes in the tree diagram.

1/ The mean is the average. It's the sum of a set of numbers divided by the number of items being averaged. Example: 20,10,10,30,40
The sum is 20+10+10+30+40=110
The mean is 110/5=22

2/ Median is the middle number when a set of numbers is arranged in order. Example: 20,10,10,30,40
First we have to arrange the numbers in order : 10,10,20,30,40
The median is middle number which is 20

3/ Mode is the number that occurs with the greatest frequency in a set of numbers
Example: 20,10,10,30,40
The mode will be 10 which is the only number that occurs twice

Use khan academy they do a great job covering math concepts efficiently and in understandable verbiage. On the topic of mean median mode and average you need to have an understanding of which approach will provide you with the most meaningful analysis when referring to your data set

First I want to thank Ms. Voshell for this blog. These exams are quite tricky in a number of ways.

I have been fortunate enough to pass the essay part, English Language usage (grammar mostly), Reading.
I will take Math this Friday which I consciously took to preview while I was completing and reducing the number of the other GK exams.

How wacky were the exams? The strangest part for me was in the reading where they had two totally disparate articles and then asked questions about the two writings point of view, tone and tense in 3 or 5 separate questions. Weird. But I approached it as a puzzle/game and got through it. For this and other reasons I want to contribute what I can to others facing these hoops that we must jump through.

Another reason I want to contribute is that Pearson requires that we must take their exams in their computer testing facilities instead of at Prometric, where the security is much stronger than some Pearson centers. I believe this is a Pearson conflict of interest.

Over all I always look at the last sentence of the question and then read the complete stem and question development. Very effective.

I jotted down the number and a phrase of the questions I was not sure about in Reading and grammar and I went ahead and answered with my best choice. However I was able to go back over all of those ones that I was not sure about (except for math obviously).

I also took and passed the Education Professional. I found many of the questions to be picky applications of definitions within the standards. Also there were questions where all four A B C D answer options were valid correct answers and you had to select the "best" answer. I professionally strongly disagree with such a multiple choice design.

On the other hand I did find the ethics materials to be a good educational review on key concerns and actually learned quite a bit.

IS THERE ANYONE TAKING THIS IN ATLANTA, GA? I have extensive study materials and guides in great shape for Education Professional which I will give to you for what they cost me. I will be finished with my General Knowledge study guides soon assuming that I pass the math exam this week and will give them to someone else in metro Atlanta for costs.

I was able to pass each of these (except for Math which I previewed and did not finish) the first time. I took an enormous amount of time to pick reliable study materials. I found good recommendations for study materials on this blog and spent a great deal of time comparing reviews for each study guide on Amazon.

Specifically:
+ CliffsNotes (recent editions) was very useful and worth the money. I especially found the practice exams useful because they explain why each answer is correct and they explain something about the other multiple choice options. That was especially helpful. For the Ed. Prof. exam I copied the questions and answers and I made spiral bound flashcards (4 and half spiral bound large index cards 50 pages each). There were a number of recurring themes.

+ I also purchased the REA FTCE GK study guide. I looked at their practice tests also. I am finding the REA explanations and descriptions for Math useful. Also the math DRILLS.

~ Mometrix SECRETS Study Guide was not as helpful for me. I think I looked at the Mometrix guide video for writing essays and did not find it to be helpful.

About the essay: It was very helpful to see the list of previous essay questions and the guidelines for writing a 4 or 5 paragraph essay. I will try to go back and find and post the suggested guidelines.

INTRO with a hook. I defined the terms. Also establish a thesis or point of view in the first paragraph.
DEVELOPMENT
Each of the 2 or 3 paragraphs in the development built on the theme. I explored pros and cons.
CONCLUSION
I restated the thesis/ point of view. I gave an example based on things that I had observed although I changed the school name. (I used a third person description of things I had personally observed that were relevant to the topic.)

I simply outlined some ideas based on a very basic graphic organizer which is very similar to this

I sketched this out quickly IN SIMPLE OUTLINE FORM ONLY with the writing materials and then typed it in. I did a quick grammar review during the last 5 minutes and found some spelling errors. I was actually half way through the last sentence in the conclusion with the time ran out. Fortunately I finished the main part of the last sentence. I was very relieved I passed. I wish I had been able to finish that last sentence for the sake of good form.

I made a list of ALL of the topics mentions for essays. I googled for some ideas.

Also most of the reading topics can be found by googling but I did not look all of them up

Going back through FTCE GK SECRETS Study Guide, I see they DO have some good explanations. Also they have online videos with code words/access keys in the manual.

Also if you like videos you can google and find online videos for free on math with very good step by step explanations. It is offered by a company that does reviews in Florida for Teachers apparently on site at teacher's conventions.

Lastly, I have found that if I have an unconvenient time, date or location, if I keep looking in the weeks and days before the exam very often a better time becomes available. Especially
The last 7 to 10 days before the exam. You can reschedule at least 24 hours before the time you have already reserved and pick a better. I have mainly done this moving to a new time LATER. Pretty smooth.

Thanks for sharing this information. I used the cliff notes and REA latest study guide to study... I practically knew how to complete each math problem however, the math test I took last week was foreign to me. I found it difficult than the last one I took. I missed it by 8 points and even went to a score verification session to fight for the 8 points. Unfortunately, they didn't approve it and retook the exam last week. The test was so much harder especially to the fact that they revised the math... I'm like stuck and don't know where to start again... I'm taking the math prep course and Palm State next week. I'm praying that this class will shed some light...

There were quite a bit of math word problems, probability, knowing what a function is, knowing the attributes of a pyramid and prisms, knowing attributes of the triangles, percentage, slopes, standard deviation, order of operations.... The version I took last week was pretty tricky...I must have had about 13 flagged questions that I was unsure of. The version I had prior to the one I took was easier to understand...

Yes. Yes. To pass Math session use the CliffNote GKT or CliffNote guidebook. I checked mine from my local library. They were extremely helpful for me.

At first I didn't indent but then I went back to indent each paragraph... I wrote my introduction and my opinion in relation to the topic given. My second paragraph I wrote about my first opinion, my third paragraph I wrote in support of my second opinion, and my last paragraph I stated in conclusion... I summed up my opinion.
You can't go wrong with that format. Keep it short and simple. I passed it the first time around.

Hi Kim!
There were quite a few word problems. There was a mph problem but I can't remember the wording. There was a percentage word problem, function, triangle prism and pyramid problem, order of operations, mean medium and mode. Be prepared for the word problems... They were quite tricky. Conversions were on there.. If you check the FTCE website there's a breakdown on the type of math questions that's on the test.

I passed the essay finally in April aafter many failed attempts and yes I did indent, but I single spaced my essay. I used a simile or metaphor (can't remember but it was a personal experience). I chose to use argumentative style structure. My first point was supporting and the second was a rebuttal. Then another supporting paragraph was back to supporting my perspective. Hope this helps and makes sense to you.

This is what I know about appealing the essay. You need to pay 75.00. Once you get to the testing center you need to fill out a form stating why you want to appeal. Also, make sure you are familiar with the rubric so you can state your case and defend it.
Also on the original blog that Melissa closed, if you go on there at the beginning - mid way you will find someone that posted there name as Appeal the Essay if I'm not mistaken. There this person talks about her experience. There are a couple of posts that say Appeal the Essay.

When you said you need to be familiar with the rubric when appealing. Where did you find rubric for 8 points and above? They changed the passing score from 6 to 8 almost 2 years ago, but on the official site they still have up 6 points only. I tried to email Pearson and got an answer with a link that still showing up to 6 points. So how can you appeal if description what you need to do to get 8 points is nowhere to be found? Thank you

The best advice I can give to anyone struggling on the reading section of the GKT is to consider preparing for the GRE Verbal section instead. Although this exam is vocabulary heavy, if you get enough study guides and go through the information daily for a few months you will get at least the minimum score of 151. I took the GKT reading two additional times after passing all other subtest on the first try. I never knew that this was a weakness for me, but I learned quickly that I would not be able to pass the state exam. All the best!

I finally figured out Math and passed the 3rd time.
I passed the essay the 4th time
and reading the 5th time.

I have yet to pass English and I cannot understand why. It was my strength in school.
I just received my score report of 186 for English in June and I scored a 195 in May. My cumulative is 195. I even went to a prep class and it was a waste of time.

It really is sad that they want great teachers, yet they jack up the prices for the tests and then make it so hard to pass. Nendy P.- Yes, I did pass it the first time. I used CliffNotes Prof Ed study guide. I found the test to be completely different from the study guide, however. The study guide covers very few scenario type of questions, which is what comprises the majority of the test. However, just use common sense and always answer what is in the best interest of the student if you are in doubt.

That would be very nice to have a tutor that has taken the revised exam. Unfortunately, there are tutors willing to help but they've taken the exam so long ago considering this test has been revised a few months ago. The study guides are a piece of cake considering what's on the math section. I just took it about two weeks ago and my study guide was useless. What would help if FTCE sold their own study guide to help and or sold practice exams. I know in NY you have that option to purchase a practice exam.

I think it's pretty evident that we have all taken basic math in high school and pre-algebra otherwise we wouldn't be where we are. I think it's a question of how long ago we've taken these classes, and our strengths and weaknesses in regard to the content. The math on that test isn't basic math only. It's pretty abstract where you have to think outside the box and it may require 2-3 steps before you derive to your final answer. I myself took the math and missed it only by 8 points. Now that they just revised it I find it to be more challenging than the last test I took.
You mentioned studying and having a tutor will not help us pass. How do you think we're going to pass then? I'm curious and would like to know your thought process.

It will take up to five weeks. Also, the scores are always released on a Tuesday after 10:00 P.M.. You will get an email from them explaining when you will be able to view and print them out.

Hello all, just wanted to let you know how I finally passed the Essay portion of this horrific GKT: I added personal experience!! This has to be what they are looking for (in addition to an Intro, supporting paragraphs, Conclusion, use of transitional words and, of course, proper Grammar and punctuation). The reason I say this is because I did not add personal experience to my other Essays due to lack of time. Honestly, my Essay was not my best Essay, but I truly believe it was the missing ingredient. So for all of you about to take the Essay, remember to add a quick personal experience in your supporting paragraphs. Good luck!!

Great feedback!

The issue I am having with the essay is balancing formal, tense, and POV. I do not know how you transitioned to first person in your essay. Am I missing something? Did you use "I" or "me"? My son scored 11/12 on the old SAT essay and assures me that it would be "wrong" to switch around from first person, to second, etc., and that I good essay is rarely first person for a college level piece.

How did you actually write about your personal experience without switching POV? Also, what was your topic? Mine was the lack of mentors and the need for solutions.

Good news on the essay - looks like most of the topics are captured in this blog. Bad news is that I find the advice conflicting and confusing. I know how to write essays, papers, etc. I knew I would not get the essay on my first try (June 14) because I didn't like what I wrote!

Appreciate any and all help on the fine essay subtest! I'll be heading to the test center to the tune of $150 MORE next Wednesday.

When writing the Essay, absolutely use 3rd person POV throughout your Essay (unless it is directly asking for your opinion). However, when adding your personal experience in your supporting paragraphs, you write in 1st person POV. That is the only way to add a personal experience and the only time you switch POV in your Essay. You can say: For example, when I was a beginning teacher... " Then, switch
back to 3rd person POV for the remainder of the Essay. Remember to also use transitional words at the beginning of each of your supporting
paragraphs: "The first strategy..." and in your concluding paragraph: "In conclusion,..."

I just sat down with a tutor today and she said you need to focus on skill 3 as it is worth 50% of your score and. Beware that with the exception of parallel and modifiers. The rest of the questions have a b and c choices which means you have to look for everything.

The same thing happened to me when I retook the ELS. I failed by 9 the 1st time and 51 the second time. But I also had more questions the 2nd time with the same amount of time and I was told that some of those questions were not worth anything. But online it says 40 minutes and 40 questions why was I given more questions?

What does appealing my score do? What does it mean to appeal? Is it the same as score verification?

Hello everyone, I just took the FTCE GK exam and only passed the reading portion of the exam. I won't find out the essay part for another 6 weeks. This is my first attempt at the test. I glad I am not the only one who feels these exams are flawed. I'm trying to get into the teaching program at school and we are required to pass this text in order to enter the program. right now I'm taking the prerequisites for the program. The professor for one of the classes even said that the test has a high failure rate. it is between 86% to over 90% fail rate.

I just took the GK Reading today and failed it for the second time. I passed ELS, Math, and Essay on the first try. The test today was nowhere near any guide given by FLDOE, or any review book for that matter. I've waited 1.5 weeks to get to this point after passing the essay, and here I am feeling like my back is against a wall. The test today seemed twice as hard 6 weeks ago. Long passages and very long answer choices. I didn't even have enough time to read the passages let alone answer long answer choices almost like short paragraphs in length. No easy questions are given, like it was really designed to make someone fail and accrue money for Pearson. With a 75% passing requirement, why is it too high compared to ELS, and Math is beyond me. This test needs to be an hour and a half long. Two passages in one? That's a whole lot of reading. It doesn't make sense why I passed the essay and ELS if I can't comprehend why I read. This is supposed to be a basic skills test, not like a rocket scientist's test. I have already lost a job offer because of this. I would like to see college professors of english, vp and principals take this test and see if they can pass it on the first try within 50 minutes and see how they fair in terms of passing rate and how they think of this exam. If they do better than prospective teachers, then I would rest my case and retake for the third time.

Liz, when did you take the test? I would think they changed/modified the test for July. I agree with you, it's impossible to complete in 55 minutes. Our friend Kim here talks about strategy and not reading the whole thing, did I just mentioned having review books, of course I did used Cliffs but it didn't help. I hope people would just stop making themselves feel somewhat smarter than the other, it's not helping. If you have some words of encouragement to say share it, and as for tips, I think test takers have had so much of that.

This last reading test was nothing like the first one and I had no hope of passing it. It feels as if they are not testing me on my ability to comprehend what I am reading. I’m at a loss. This is a really great medium to help professionals. I am really struggling with the reading. I have passed everything including the subject area and professional.I don't know what else to do. I have taken it 4 times so far and I have not been reappointed for the 2016-2017 school year. I have also tried reading the questions first but that didn't work either. Like you said, read the questions first. Use cliff notes. Categorize the questions, you get a lot of repeats like questions about "which sentence should be moved to another paragraph". or "what is the tone of the passage?" I can't remember but if you look at questions from different textbooks, you'll notice the questions are almost a repeat.

I usually skim the first paragraph. Read all the questions and skim the answers. Then I go back to read/skim the rest of the story.

The first paragraph usually introduces the topic.

Taylor - yes, you are not only allowed but are expected to write your anecdotal evidence in first person. The rest of the essay should be written in third person. Hope this helps. :)

If anyone is interested in voicing your concerns about non preparation material for the general knowledge test, poor score report on the gk I.e. not knowing what areas to study for the second time and the high cost of retaking the exam. Then contact Senator Jeff Clemens office by e mail to his aide Chauncey at 561-540-1140
And e mail him at Graham.chauncey@flsenate.gov
Make sure you follow up immediately by phone to see if he got your e mail.
The aide said they will take action and I stressed how him may get a song and dance in how things have to go for a vote to Congress

In my opinion, they need better study guides for ALL ftce exams. I studied for the Prof. Ed test using the Cliff Notes study guide, and I found the exam to be very different from the study guide. The test itself was mostly situation-based, the guide did not cover this type of material at all. Why is there such a gap between the study guides and what is on the actual test?

The mathematics 6-12 exam is the same way. I think the most recent study guide I found was published in 2014, and the competencies were revamped in 2015. So there isn't one study guide that was created since they last overhauled the test.

If the study guides provided a better foundation for what is actually on the test, there might be a higher first time pass rate.

Hello Everyone, (PLEASE OFFER some help)!!

I was terminated for not successfully completing the FTCE GK before June 30th, but I only have the English subtest remaining.
I was unsuccessful eight times :( for the English subtest. My average is consistent with a 195. In May I missed it by .4% (1 question when they only administered 39 questions also). I should have done a score verification, but there was too much going on (true family medical emergency and left the state). Then in June, I was unsuccessful by 8% wrong (3 questions). They only gave me 39 questions opposed to 40 again, so I am wondering if I should do a verification on that but wonder what I will benefit. Also, is it invalid now or would it be permitted even though I took it again last Saturday?

Can anyone offer advice?

I passed the math the 2nd time around and have no idea how I was even successful at passing the reading. That has always been my lowest score.

My district rep suggested possibly considering the GRE because it only requires a score of 150, but it costs $200 and it consists of the reading and english (reading is my weakness). I am becoming discouraged. Can anyone make a suggestion?

Regarding the essay, I found this guy's videos to be helpful. Writing the time essay is different from your regular essay. Just use simple sentence structure. Don't try to make the essay lengthy and wordy.

Make your statement, justify it, and give an example. I used his video and passed my essay on the second try. Make sure you use transitional words. A friend of mine used to grade SAT essays. They scan through the essays only. So you need to have good transition from each statement to the next.

They never officially notified, on Saturday I went into shock , when my Math exam window opened and it stated 50 questions. 5 additional questions make a big difference in your score.

After four attempts, I finally passed the essay. The following is a break down of how I did it;
I wrote four paragraphs.
1st paragraph - 4 sentences- started with a quote from a famous person, restated the question, then ended with a sentence like.."Let's examine the...(Compare and Contrast essay)
2nd and 3rd paragraphs - Body paragraphs - 2nd paragraph - 7 sentences - started with the transition word, First. 3rd paragraph - 6 sentences - started with the transition word Second. I stated three things that supported my idea, and then gave an example for each,-I used transitions words such as, for instance, to start examples, one example was my personal experience, I stated "At the school I work at..." My last sentence wrapped up the paragraph using three key words.
4th paragraph started with In conclusion.. Then recapped all that I mentioned in the essay, added another famous quote, and ended with a call to action sentence.
I hope this helps anyone needing to pass the essay. I feel for all of you who are struggling and wish you all the best. I would remind myself what I tell my students every time they take a test; "Take your time, breathe, if you don't know it skip it and go back to it later, that way you are not stressed throughout the test because of it. You got this, Don't Give Up!

For the certification. If you took education classes in another state, but you were not verified. Can they give you a 5 year cert if you have education courses but not a teaching cert from another state? Or will they automatically give you a letter of eligibility for only 3 years?

The REA GK book is the best book to study from.
Could not find much help online unless you pay.
The SAT is very similar to the GK test and their is a lot of online help for the SAT that can be used for the GK like this website http://blog.prepscholar.com/how-to-get-800-on-sat-reading-10-strategies-by-a-perfect-scorer

I found this info thats very helpful for the reading portion of the GK on the above website

Skim the passage on the first read through. Don't try to understand every single line, or write notes predicting what the questions will be. Just get a general understanding of the passage. You want to try to finish reading the passage in 3 minutes, if possible.
Next, go to the questions. If the question refers to a line number or sentence, then go back to that line number or sentence and understand the text around it.
If you can't answer a question within 30 seconds, skip it.

For writing. must indent and write five paragraph essay as basic as possible. Only write words you can spell. Search 5 Paragraph Expository Essay for 5th grade if you need to refresh memory

I take the GKT in 2 weeks and I'm a nervous wreck. I think I'm overthinking these things. I'm using the 3rd edition of the Cliffnotes to study and I find it simple enough. My university also provided me with study materials that I've been working through and I find them simple as well. I feel as if the simplicity is deceiving. Either that or because I'm a recent high school graduate (now in college) and everything is fresh in my mind. Is there anyone here who has taken the test quite recently (this year)?

Those are passages often show up in the test (At least, I saw them on mine). The questions would be slightly different, but it would help you get a general idea about reading when you do the actual test.

I found this website very helpful. I passed the ELS, reading and math, still waiting for the result of essay. However, like a lot of people, my biggest challenge is the reading. I was even surprised when I got the passing score because I have no clue what I was reading. However, I did have some good resources to share. The questions are different, but it did offer the same passages which will help you get a general idea of the test. Hopefully, it will help those people who are struggling passing GK reading.

I just wanted to leave it here because I am struggling with reading. I have found the passage for Graffiti, and also another based on the elevator music. Surprisingly, it is on two of the study guides provided by NESINC. One of them is an old one, and I found it on another website....

Hello All I have a friend who lost her job in June because she couldn't pass the GK Math portion of the test. Sadly just before she was fired she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She lost her job which means she lost her insurance as well. She is very desperate and overwhelmed as you can imagine. Just a heads up, if you are planning to take the Prof Ed test anytime soon. I took it today (Tue 11/22) and had 126 questions. Still only has 120mins. All the study and practice test give you 120 and 120mins to complete. Good Luck!

I recently took the prof ed exam and failed. Studied for hours! Notes, study guides, pretest, online sites. I had 126 questions. I didnt need the full 2.5 hours but the test had so many confusing questions and I thought I was prepraded, but guess not. Please help!!!!! Need to pass this test asap. Thank you

Hi everyone,
I have failed the Essay for the third time : 6,6,6. For the first two I was stopped in the middle of my conclusion. For the last one, I managed my time much better and felt confident I had written a good essay.
I do not understand how I can improve on what I did, as I followed everything expected.
Does anyone know where to find the rubric/criteria for scoring above a 6 ? How absurd not having access to this information from the GK test information guide. This is the first thing I give my students when I want them to succeed!
I have no clue how I can do better. Any more tips than the ones already posted would be welcome.

Hey guys, so I finally got my scores back (still don't know if I passed the essay though). I scored a 180 on the Math and a 166 on the Reading. Any tips or study sites you all could provide would be great. I bought the CliffsNotes FTCE General Knowledge Test book a few weeks ago and it has been helping me out a lot. I'm scheduled to re-take the test this upcoming 13th.

Do not do a score verification - waste of time and money. You will get your test on one screen with the answers - You have to prove why the answer the test has is wrong and your answer is correct. I verified my essay and there was about a 20 minute intro which said for ESL, Reading and Math - you have to prove why your answer is the correct one. Please don't waste your time and money - easier to just retake. Hope this helps.

Will be nice to meet at the library at least once a week after work to talk and exchange ideas in how to pass these test. I think that way we can help each other with each strength. The blog is fantastic, but I think we should organize some kind of study group to gather ideas. Libraries usually have rooms with boards where we can write and practice the skills we need for the test. I am in Kissimmee, so for me would be nice to go to the public library there....but open to other locations as well. If you feel like this is something will benefit you, please contact me. We are all in this together, and for some of us it represent keeping our current teaching job.
I think together we can win this.

So just took the FTCE again (Essay, Reading & Math) and didn't pass the Reading or Math again. (I still am waiting for my Essay score for the 1st attempt too, but re-took it just in case I didn't pass. I'm very confused how I didn't pass Math because I calculated how many questions I knew I got right and it was about 7% higher than I needed. I bought the 3rd edition CliffsNotes book and although it was a great study tool, I knew about 90% of it and still didn't pass. Just a warning to anyone who is studying that book.

I also found out a few days ago that I passed my essay on my first attempt! I was so worried that I wasn't going to because I ran out of time and my conclusion only had 2 sentences. To those who are taking or re-taking the essay, this is how I formatted it.
Introduction- 4 sentences
2nd & 3rd paragraph- 3-4 sentences
Conclusion- only 2, but restated thesis

I also used a personal example, hope this helps!

How long did it take for you all to get a Score Verification date? Mine still says "Unavailable" and I took my first exam December 13..

If you have a documented medical issue, just an idea that might help, but not sure if you want to go this route. Go to your doctor and ask for a letter from him on his letter head stating that your medial issue requires that you have extra time to take the test. You will then fax that letter with an application to pearson, they will intern send you an email to schedule your next exam with acomadationsions if approved. This is helping me, but of course I haven't passed anything yet. I can tell you that the FTCE book has everything that is on the test for math. And, also I've herd that if your in my area that going tot he commercial blvd testing center is a good idea.

Just curious if you're retaking the reading, are your reading passages the same? Because mine happened to be the same the second time I took it, which was helpful! I would "skim" the passages so I had more time to answer the questions.
For writing, make sure you're indenting all 5 paragraphs, write as many details/examples as you can. Write an intro & closing paragraphs. Check your spelling and punctuation. My essay was about internet usage in schools, so I just wrote as much as I could, both factual and opinion.

Hey guys, I couldn't remember if the Mathematics Reference Sheet included the areas or perimeters of different shapes. I'm pretty sure it only had the areas, the FTCE site says it only has the areas but I remember thinking that during the last exam I took the reference sheet looked different. There is a workshop that help with all the FTCE exams. I used it to prepare for the GK test and finally I passed. Its about $50 or something close to that. The website is thelearningliaisons.com. Good luck.

To anyone who needs to pass the English portion of the GK exams. Khanacademy.com helped me practice and I passed. Create a free account with Khan academy, once in, go to the SAT section (use the reading and writing section) and use the practice exams. There are about 5 questions at a time for each section of the practice. When you scroll down in the reading/writing you will see they are titled just like the GK (subject verb agreement, possessive nouns, etc).

Hi Emma,

the reading I took 3 times, time was the biggest issue for me. Once the test was extended for an additional 15 minutes, over a year ago, I was able to pass. Read through the articles quickly, and I would suggest you read your answer choices first. The essay you have to write 4 - 5 paragraphs. I used text evidence to support the topic and also included personal example. I don't remember my topic since I took this test a while ago. But I took the writing twice, the 2nd time I passed. The personal example I think made a big difference and I was able to pass, I also tried to use more advance vocabulary. Have you taken the prof ed exam? I am having trouble with this test. I took it twice and failed :((((

i took and passed the Professional Test yesterday. I used REA's FTCE Professional Education study book that is by Erin Mander Tammy Powell Chris Rose. The way I studied was I read one chapter a day over the course of a week. There are 2 practice test. I took the first one after I finished the book. After I checked the answers and understood why I got certain questions incorrect, then I took the second test. I then checked and got the explanation for why the ones I got incorrect were wrong. After that I went on the FTCE website and did the 30 question sample test. Now understand, the study questions are not repeated on the test, but the format and the way they are presented are the same, so it helped me prepare my brain for the way the questions were going to come at me.

I have a great resource for those trying to pass the GK Reading. After failing MANY times, I had to find another way and I passed! I bought a college reading textbook that focuses on improving reading skills. The name of this book is Ten Steps to Improving College reading Skills by John Langan. It's $35 and it includes the textbook and a code. The code is for access to extra practice (ALOT of practice). This text goes over each skill you need to know for the GK Reading. And it is seperated by chapter. I liked this because it focused on each skill at a time, and after explaining it'll give you practices. I studied a chapter within a day or 2.... and i complete Part 1 of the text book and then did the practices that the code provided online. The reading wasn't boring.

I failed many times, and when I finally got this book I passed. It helps you read more actively. I wanted to share this with you guys because I know that the resources that we are provided with out there only shows and gives the minimal amount of info. and we need more than just easy questions that are not even compared to the actual test.

The only thing I can say about this book that I wish it had. Were the answers to all the questions. But since it is a college textbook for students it does not provide that. But I was still happy with my purchase. It took me 3 weeks to finish the text, and once I did I started working on the practices using the code for about a week.... and then I took it yesterday and passed.

I hope this helps many of you. I struggled a lot with this one. 10 times to be exact! Do not give up! And do not let this test discourage you from the real goal.

I'm so sick of this test. The first time I took the Math portion of the exam, I made a 180, then a 190, and now a 196. It's so frustrating. I also still haven't passed the Reading. I feel like the exam has 3 easy passages and then throws in a hard one which causes me to fail since I use so much time reading it over and over again just to comprehend it. Just failed the GKT math portion for the fourth time. Paid a lot to be tutored for it and when I took it this morning the whole test had completely changed. Everything we focused on was minimal on the test. The test now focuses a lot on word problems dealing with ratios/proportions , and conversions. I know how you feel I am in the same boat. I took the math portion again for the third time and failed it again a couple of weeks ago. I am in the process of scheduling to take it again and I am dreading it. I am at the point in my classes where if I don't pass I can't take anymore classes and I am SO ready to be done with school lol. I actually thought that I was prepared the last time for the exam, but it was completely different than it had in on my previous attempts. I am going to continue to work through the study materials on study.com and one that I bought in conjunction with a study guide book and pray that it does the trick.

Hey Allie, thanks for letting us know they updated the Math portion of the exam. I'm re-taking it for the 4th time this Saturday. I found the website Exam Edge very useful, they have 1 free practice test which consists of 10 questions, or you can pay to have access to 5, 10, 25, etc. amount of tests that are written in test form. I really hope I pass it this time, my scores went from a 180, 190, to a 196. :(

Thanks for the encouragement. I am trying to pass the GK Math. I first got a 160 on the test, Lately I keep getting in the 190's. I lost my job due to this Math section.

I took the GK for the fourth time today and can not passed any sections. The last time I took the essay, I got a 7. I am getting so discouraged that I do not know what to do. I felt that I should of passed all parts of the GK.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to study for the test?

Does anyone have any study guides or websites that offer online tutoring for the math portion of the GKT? I took the test today and didn't pass. I wish we could protest if this is not our content area for teaching.

I am scheduled to take the math portion of the GK exam again on Friday. Any tips or study guides that any one is aware of? It would be greatly appreciated. I keep putting off taking it again, but I am at the point now where I can't finish my classes until I pass it. TIA :)

Please someone help! I have failed the essay portion twice now. I received a score of 6 both times. I used personal experience the second attempt, but I still received the same score. I am the only provider for my children and I am going to lose my job if I cannot pass the essay when I take it Monday, May 15th. Is there anyone who knows where to direct me for help? A study guide? Essay examples? Also, I am wanting to find out if there is any legal action being taken against Pearson or the state.

Use kahn academy it's free yeah. You can take an assessment and it will steer you to were you need additional instruction. The lessins are efficient and comprehensive and they are followed by practice questions

Everyone please Google ABCnews teachers test, the news is from a week ago, it's about the GK scam test. If you go all the way to the botttom of the website you can send to the reporter how many time you have taken the test. Some teachers are taking the state and Person to court.

Restate the topic - Tell your audience what you will be writing about.

In spite the initial cost the benefits of ----- out-weight the costs. There are advantage or disadvantage.

I am working toward my certification in K-12 Music through the TeacherReady online program via the University of West Florida. I already have several years of teaching experience, but never got around to getting an actual certificate. The information I plan to provide should help those who are also going "backwards" through this process.
